What the numbers tell us

The median specialty coffee in South Africa costs R245 per 250g bag. That's roughly R98,00 per 100g — or about R17,64 per cup if you're dosing 18g for espresso.

At the entry level, blends and commodity-origin single origins start around R140. At the top end, competition-grade lots like Panama Geisha push R799 — a 6x premium over the floor.

Roasters: get your beans listed

We're building the most comprehensive specialty coffee price database in South Africa. If your roastery isn't in the index yet, send us your current retail price list and we'll add you to the next quarterly update.

Methodology

Prices are collected from roaster websites and verified against current listings. All prices are retail (not wholesale or subscription-discounted) and normalised to 250g for comparison. Where a roaster sells in non-standard sizes (e.g. 200g, 1kg), the listed price is for the actual bag size shown.

The index currently covers 68 beans from 12 roasters — approximately 37% of the 185 beans in our full directory. Coverage will expand with each quarterly update as more roasters participate.

Dataset last updated: Q3 2026. Next update: Q4 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SA Coffee Price Index?

The SA Coffee Price Index tracks retail specialty coffee prices across South African roasters. It currently covers 68 beans from 12 roasters, normalised to a 250g bag size for fair comparison.

How are the coffee prices collected?

Prices are sourced directly from roaster websites and online retail listings. Each price is recorded at its listed bag size and then normalised to a per-100g figure so beans of different sizes can be compared fairly.

Why are prices normalised to 250g?

250g is the most common retail bag size for South African specialty coffee. Normalising to this weight lets consumers compare apples to apples across roasters who sell in 200g, 250g, 500g or 1kg bags.

How often is the Price Index updated?

The index is updated quarterly. The current dataset reflects Q3 2026 pricing.

How can a roaster get listed?

Any South African specialty coffee roaster with publicly listed retail prices can be included. Contact Coffee Journal through the website to request inclusion.
