Culture Coffee: The House Blend of Pretoria

Bibi Burness June 3, 2026

I always thought "House Blend of Pretoria" was the kind of tagline you award yourself with a wink. Then I stood at the Culture Coffee booth at Jo'burg Coffee Festival 2026 and realised it wasn't a wink at all — it was a job description.

## The Booth

The banner said it in white sans-serif on black. The wraparound at the base of the counter was a hand-drawn panoramic sketch of Pretoria's skyline running the full length of the bar. They didn't just bring coffee from Pretoria. They brought Pretoria.

## The Brand

Note on the spelling: the booth uses both. Base logo reads CULTURE ROASTERY, aprons read KULTUUR. Intentional dual-branding — Kultuur is the Afrikaans spelling — not a typo.

## CMA 2025 — Double Shortlist

| Category | Detail |
|----------|--------|
| Café Community Award (shortlist) | Recognising Culture's role in the Pretoria community |
| Barista of the Year (shortlist) | James Odendaal — Culture Coffee |

Two shortlist appearances in the same year, across two different award philosophies — one for who they are to their community, one for how good their bar talent is.

## The Festival Menu — Five Coffees, Honestly Priced

House Blend at R30 espresso as the on-ramp. Sold-out Colombian Chiroso at R65 as the ceiling. No gatekeeping pricing. Freeze-distilled milk available at +R15.

Culture Blend — roasted nuts, caramel sweetness, smooth finish. Tanzania & Brazil. The everyday cup.

Uganda Imbalu Anaerobic Natural — ripe cherry, cassis, plum over dark cacao, warming spice, buttery toffee. From Elgon, 1800–2000 masl.

El Salvador Finca Ethiopia Geisha — wild red strawberry, tart cherry, dried raisin, dark cacao nib. Anaerobic Natural.

Ethiopia Taferi Kela Anaerobic Honey — jasmine, strawberry, honey, ripe mango, blackcurrant, crisp green apple. From Sidamo.

Colombia Adrián Lasso Chiroso — SOLD OUT. Juicy strawberry, passionfruit, blood orange, red wine tannins. R65 espresso / R680 per 250g.

## Wamukisa — A Name That Tells a Story

Wamukisa is a Luganda word — it means blessing. Naming a milk-built blend "blessing" in the language of one of the regions you source from is a Café Community Award nomination in three syllables.
